a negative event.
an energetic trace.
a dynamic memorial.
Negative remnant of a past event
Sociologist Zygmunt Bauman speaks of a fluid modernity
and observes a prevailing order with the main characteristics of volatility, instability, as well
as fragility. To survive in today’s world, you have to
be fluid, you have to adapt quickly to new changes
and reinvent yourself again and again. David Foster
Wallace also uses the water motif in his fish parable,
when he wants to grasp the prevailing reality
with the question “What is water?" It is important to
know one’s surroundings precisely, to be awake and
to become aware of other life worlds.
Dried out riverbeds, lakes
all water on this planet has always been there
HYDROSPHERE

a closed system: same water is found all around
an open system: as it is changing bodies constantly
“There are tides in the body."
Virginia Woolf in Mrs. Dollaway
We ebb and flow across time and space – body, to body, to body, to body.
Astrida Neimanis
I see the sea rising in your eyes
& feel it arriving in mine

I've taken for granted our life
& realise sea levels have tides

in water we float with the stream
& not caring of how it might seem
I dream of a life
What if there was no sea
dried out lakes
and shapes of stones
ripples in sand
there wouldn't be fishes
and no more boats
but really
what if there was no sea
of course no islands
or humans
though, I mean, simply visually
how would it look
& how would it feel
nothing, no nothing, still would seem real
WATER TEACHES:
- flow
- relationship
- dissolvability of boundaries
- a false sense of security
humans as terrestrial creatures feel that the earth is and will remain solid beneath us. With climate change, permafrost layers being destroyed, water levels rising this is not the case anymore. & make it an existential crisis. Earth is giving way beneath our feet...

Water wants to move, find new bodies to animate, to temporarily inhabit & at times it wants to stay as is. Consistently within a body, either vast & long-living or ephemeral & momentarily, needing both to stay in an equilibrium.
Astrida Neimanis
Water preserves memory & washes it away
It is an archive of feeling
- an archive of forgetting.
Not everything should be remembered
The water is holding plural realities/histories together. Not in a linear manner

Auto-ethnographic approach
The linking of water and the goals of feminism, especially in regards to the work of Astrida Neimanis.
a dedication to environmental issues and an awareness of the correlation between women and nature. This notion specifically emphasises the way both nature and women are treated by a patriarchal society.
Sense of knowledge inside bodies of water
How do I let water speak about its memory?
Permafrost
A body of matter
Water in soil
10-100k years old
a time machine reflecting atmospheres from the past
through global warming this ice (water) is reintroduced into todays world. Into the active part of the Hydrosphere
time is matter
time is material
- in a place
Voices of geological ancestors
Water as a way of thinking, feeling, & working
Other ideas that float around
Archives - connected to ancient relics

What about all these archives?
Ice core samples, mushroom, mycelium, permafrost to fashion, personal archives

the feeling of belonging (constant personal question)
The human urge to preserve and keep track. dwell in the past
study atmospheres from the past - with issue of having to generalise from (ephemeral) pieces, especially ice core samples, from specific locations/contexts (Susan Schuppli - material witness / learning from ice)

Just like in fashion, or current trends eg. the digital retrofuturism romanticising the y2k- tumbler, chaotic style, not very streamlined like today(theres 5 websites) - the early days of the internet aesthetic making a comeback with gen Z/alpha - nostalgic escapism - yet the new gen is basing this on specific media at hand, not true to the reality from that time?, creating alternative interpretations + bridging connections to older generations with their actual lived experience of y2k

does the same go for ice, water, mycelium, other than human matter based ancestral archives? - is there a different possibility of reading and interacting with their knowledge?
Of reading their traces/or no traces?

just like the new trends of digital retrofuturism liquifying the past with today - water as matter has history and present encoded - can I decode? learn how to 'better' preserve, read the past without disregarding its circular connection to the possible and present - learn how to listen to water - what could it look like for it to communicate to us through its intuitive nature?

Possible auto-ethnographic approach - the way i have used, related to, approached water in the past

"On the contrary, the human mind is a surprisingly efficient and even elegant system that operates with small amounts of information; it seeks not to infer brute correlations among data points but to create explanations."

"..such programs are stuck in a prehuman or nonhuman phase of cognitive evolution. Their deepest flaw is the absence of the most critical capacity of any intelligence: to say not only what is the case, what was the case and what will be the case — that’s description and prediction — but also what is not the case and what could and could not be the case. Those are the ingredients of explanation, the mark of true intelligence."

"They either overgenerate (producing both truths and falsehoods, endorsing ethical and unethical decisions alike) or undergenerate (exhibiting noncommitment to any decisions and indifference to consequences)."
